Our Costa Rica La Minita coffee is grown at the Hacienda La Minita, Bustamante, Tarrazu region, Costa Rica. “La Minita” means “little mine” in Spanish. The farm, which is approximately 2,000 acres in size, lies between the town of Bustamante and the Tarrazu river. The mill which processes the coffee, also owned by La Minita, is located at the bottom of the farm where it meets the river. The altitude of La Minita ranges from 3,500-5,000’. The flowering occurs in April or May, and the harvest takes place in December and January. Typica, Caturra, Burbon and Catuai are all grown on the farm under a carefully managed canopy of Poro shade trees which naturally provide essential nitrogen to the coffee trees and minimize the need for fertilizer inputs.

Rich & Smooth

Founder Bill McAlpin created a self-contained, family community for his workers that are also integrated into the nearby town of Bustamante. The full-time workers and their families all live on the farm grounds, and are provided free housing, utilities, clean water, and preventative medical and dental care. In addition, La Minita also sponsors a soccer team and a choir. A cooperative food program is also set up through the worker’s association to assist in managing food costs and allowing workers to take advantage of bulk purchasing.

Coffee fruit is meticulously hand-selected by contract workers brought to the farm each year and supervised by farm employees. The workers only pick perfectly ripe fruit and are inspected to ensure the quality of their work. They are paid a premium for their skill and respect of farm property. At the mill, the La Minita is pulped, fermented, fully washed, machine dried, and meticulously sorted by hand to remove every imperfect bean. We roast this coffee to a light/medium color to highlight the subtle character.
